Zonulin Test

Why Test for Zonulin?

Back to Test Profiles

Zonulin is a protein that upon binding to its receptor, causes the disassembly of tight gap junctions and increased permeability within the intestines. It has been reported that patients with active celiac disease showed higher levels of zonulin than nonceliac patients.

It is suggested that increased levels of zonulin are a contributing factor to development of celiac disease, autoimmune disorders, insulin dependent diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
